What is a WOF?

Stay legal. Stay safe.

A Warrant of Fitness is a regular NZTA safety check — not a full service, and not a pre-purchase inspection. It confirms your vehicle is safe to drive at the time of the check.

At Auto Surgeons in Tauranga, we explain the results in plain English and can often fix failed items the same day.

What we check

Our WOF covers items such as:

  • Tyre condition (including tread depth)
  • Brakes
  • Structure and rust in key safety areas
  • Lights and indicators
  • Windscreen and glass safety
  • Wipers and washers
  • Doors (open and close safely)
  • Seatbelts
  • Airbags (if fitted)
  • Speedometer
  • Steering and suspension
  • Exhaust (no leaks, not too smoky or loud)
  • Clean windscreens (front and rear)
  • Fuel system (no leaks)

What a WOF does not cover

A WOF is not a full check of your whole vehicle. For example, it does not include:

  • Engine, clutch, gearbox and differential condition
  • Oil and fluid levels or condition
  • Paintwork and some rust in non-structural areas

Need a service, repair or tyre work as well? We can help with that too — just ask when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

A WOF is a regular safety check to make sure your vehicle meets NZTA standards. In New Zealand it is illegal to drive a vehicle that needs a WOF and does not have a current one (or is not displaying a valid WOF label).
Most WOFs take about 45–60 minutes. We will let you know if anything needs extra time.
Just bring the vehicle and keys. If something has been worrying you (brakes, lights, a warning light), mention it when you book or drop off.
You will get a clear list of what failed. You generally should not drive on the road until it is fixed and has a valid WOF — unless you are taking it straight for repair or another WOF and it is safe to do so. We can often repair failed items here and recheck so you can leave with a pass.
